Honeywell shares are under pressure Thursday, despite the industrial conglomerate exceeding expectations for first-quarter sales and earnings. The culprits: Softer guidance for the current quarter and some uncertainty about a recovery in some of its key businesses. Honeywell Why we own it: Honeywell is a provider of industrial technology solutions to companies in various industries. Building automation was down year over year as growth in the longer-cycle solutions business was offset by continued weakness in the shorter-cycle products business. JPMorgan Chase , Wells Fargo and Bank of America reported a combined $2.2 billion in overdraft fees in 2023, roughly $700 million less than the previous year, according to regulatory filings. Overdraft fees are triggered when a customer attempts to spend more than the balance in their checking accounts. Banks say overdraft services are a lifeline that helps users avoid worse options like payday loans, while critics including President Biden say the fees exploit struggling Americans. But even before recent efforts by regulators, banks' haul from overdraft has been on the decline. Those who kept the fees, including JPMorgan, limited the types of transactions that trigger penalties, got rid of fees for bounced checks and introduced one-day grace periods and $50 cushions to reduce their frequency.

Honeywell International is putting cash to work with a big acquisition in the security space. The all-cash deal is Honeywell's largest acquisition in eight years, and one that should bolster its struggling building technologies division . By acquiring Carrier's Global Access Solutions unit — which manufactures products like electronic locks, video monitoring apps and fire alarms — Honeywell is setting itself up to benefit from growing demand for safety and access solutions. "You will never see a roll back in safety and security," Jim said during an interview with Honeywell CEO Vimal Kapur on Friday. A host of new data centers, drug manufacturing plants and semiconductor fabrication plants will require digital access solutions and robust security options.

Sima Sistani, the 44-year-old CEO of WeightWatchers, is aware of this, and she recognized WeightWatchers had to evolve – or else. The social pillar of the environmental, social and corporate governance investing framework — known as ESG in short — has been dubbed the "middle child" largely due to data challenges. For years, the social pillar has been considered relatively nebulous and hard to quantify. And it comes despite the fact that the ESG investing framework has found itself in hot water politically. In these cases, she said the social pillar comes into play in ensuring a carbon transition is equitable and just. A fraught environmentGlobally, it appears social themes will become more clear and important to investors over time.

HON YTD mountain Honeywell YTD Unfortunately, Honeywell hit a 52-week low in Thursday's terrible market. Moreover, guidance for the remainder of the year was mixed: Sales are expected to be better than we thought. Honeywell repurchased 5.3 million shares during the quarter, more than double the amount purchased in the second quarter. Additionally, for both the full year and the current quarter, earnings performance is being suppressed by pension liabilities. Qualitatively, continued volatility is expected but management believes they can deliver further growth, margin expansion, and cash growth "in line or above EPS growth."

In the coming weeks, the bank will terminate around 1% or 2% of its employees, according to a person with knowledge of the plans. The S & P 500 closed at its bear market low a year ago Thursday — ending Oct. 12, 2022, at its lowest close since November 2020 . In hindsight, that dramatic turnaround was the start of a rally that saw the S & P 500 climb 22% from the close on Oct. 12, 2022, through Wednesday. Palo Alto Networks, meanwhile, has successfully pivoted to profitability, joining the S & P 500 as a result, and repeatedly demonstrated the quality of its cybersecurity platform.
